Living Colour at The Fillmore | San Francisco, California | 3/27/2013 (Concert Review)

Living-Colour-Concert-Review-Vivid-25th-Anniversary-Live-Music-Photos-Photography-The-Fillmore-San-Francisco-FI

“Yeah, we rule a very tiny kingdom…”  Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid’s modest response to a fan shouting out “you rule” in-between songs during their lengthy set, gesturing to the crowd within the historic Fillmore in San Francisco as they celebrated with their “Vivid 25th Anniversary Tour” last night.   The band literally attacked the stage, with drummer Will Calhoun busting a large hole in the kick drum two songs in, with their explosive live performance of their classic Grammy Award-winning 1988 hit, “Cult of Personality”.  Playing Vivid front to back, the group put on an amazing concert that underscored what a great work that album was, taking us back to a time when albums mattered, as well as showcasing their innovative blending of disparate musical styles and genres into something really unique and powerful.

Caprices Festival 2013 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland: 9-Day Music Artist Live Concert Event Review & Recap

March 22, 2013 by Jason DeBord 1 Comment

Caprices-Festival-2013-Crans-Montana-Switerland-Concert-Review-Artists-Line-Up-Videos-Interviews-Photos-Images-FI

Since this was a pretty special experience and International music event, I thought I would share some thoughts and photos in summary here, mostly in an effort to genuinely promote and recommend this event to those who might not have heard of it or ever considering attending themselves.  The 9-day event took place in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, a coming together of twin ski/resort towns to put on Caprices Festival, hosting dozens of musical artists spanning many different genres and styles.  I actually only ran into a couple of Americans during the nine days of concerts (both had come out from New York for Tori Amos), so I think spreading some more information about the event on a U.S.-based site might bring out more people from the United States for future incarnations of this annual event, which celebrated it’s 10th anniversary this year, which also happened to mark some big changes and growth in size and line-up. Travel Destination Journal & Pictorial: Crans-Montana, Switzerland (Caprices Festival 2013)

Crans-Montana-Switzerland-Valais-Swiss-Alps-Street-Photography-Travel-Review-Destination-2013-Caprices-Festival-FI

Having recently returned from my trip to Crans-Montana, Switzerland for Caprices Festival, I thought I would share some thoughts and feelings about the ski resort town that hosted the event for those who might have an interested in going there as a travel destination.  Since I am not into skiing and snow-related sports, it was not a vacation spot at the top of my list, as it obviously offers a lot of recreation opportunities that do not appeal to me on a personal level.  Even so, I really loved exploring the town and completely enjoyed myself, and plan to return for the same festival next year and look forward to making another visit to the two ski resort towns. Caprices Festival Photojournal | Après-ski & Modernity | Crans-Montana, Switzerland

Caprices-Festival-2013-Crans-Montana-Switerland-Concert-Review-Artists-Line-Up-Videos-Interviews-Photos-Images-Modernity-Apre-Ski

I did not make it to Après-ski and Modernity until the final day of Caprices Festival in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, which actually worked out great as far as Modernity went, as it was the sunniest day and very clear out, so I had a nice opportunity to take in the beautiful mountains from an amazing vantage point.  However, at the time I stopped in at Après-ski, there was no scheduled live music (hence the photos of the empty space).  I did shoot some video of the amazing views of the Swiss Alps from Modernity, which sits atop the ski slopes during the 9-day long music fesitval, just a short 20 minute walk and fun ride up the mountain from the main arenas and areas for the main part of the annual music festival. Morrissey at Mondavi Center, U.C. Davis | Davis, California | 3/4/2013 (Concert Review)

Morrissey-2013-Concert-Review-Mondavi-Center-UC-Davis-California-Music-March-4-Set-List-Photos-The-Smiths-FI

“To give is the reason I live”…  a Frankie Valli lyric and a comment made by Morrissey on stage well into his set at Mondavi Center at U.C. Davis in Davis, California.  Morrissey has long been a fundamental part of my favorite music artists of all-time, and more than all of them, his music has always moved me – those special moments where the words and the sound connects with me, that chill down my spine and adrenaline rush…  as part of the soundtrack of my life, Morrissey and his work add texture, substance, and color unlike any other artist.  And his live appearances have become increasingly rare, so any opportunity I have to experience it “for real”, in person, I am there, as the live experience just magnifies it all.  And the show last night at Mondavi Center was a spectacular celebration among a special group of fans. King of The Blues.  The Beale Street Blues Boy.  Legend.  Not much to say about having an opportunity to see B.B. King live in concert other than that it is an honor.  A very special venue – Golden State Theatre in Monterey, California – served as the perfect host to an amazing night with one of the most important musicians in our lifetimes, at age 87, as well as a phenomenal opening set from an incredibly gifted 12 year old.

Crystal-Gayle-Live-Concert-Review-2013-Thunder-Valley-Lincoln-California-Tour-FI

Last night Thunder Valley Resort & Casino played host to one of a short run of shows by music legend Crystal Gayle.  The award-winning singer, best known for her 1977 hit, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”., put on an amazing show of her own songs as well as tributes to the works of others, with her own signature style.  It was incredible to have an opportunity to enjoy the show put on by her along with her sister Peggy Sue and the five-piece band led by Jay Patten.

P!nk’s “Truth About Love Tour” at HP Pavilion | San Jose, California | 2/18/2013 (Concert Review)

P!nk-Pink-Concert-Review-2013-Tour-Truth-About-Love-San-Jose-HP-Pavilion-Photos-FI

P!nk’s “The Truth About Love” tour is part pop/rock concert, part carnival, part dance revue, part live movie, and part acrobatics.  It’s such a tight and interactive event, most of it happens faster than you can really process it.  P!nk is like part rock star, part Olympian, and it’s amazing how much energy she can put into the “show” part of the show and still manage to catch a breath to sing in addition to everything else.  But somehow she pulls it off, and of all of the artists touring today, makes use of a massive indoor arena to create both spectacle and up close and personal opportunities between her and her fans (no matter where they might be sitting or standing).  A really fantastic event, and pioneering way of building on great music with really unique and innovative performances.

Marilyn Manson at Modesto Centre Plaza | Modesto, California | 2/15/2013 (Concert Review)

Marilyn-Manson-Concert-Review-Photos-2013-Modesto-California-Rock-Subculture-FI

Going to a Marilyn Manson concert is quite an experience, and probably not understood except by those who have done the same.  To draw a comparison with the art world, it is akin to going to art museums in London and stopping in at the Tate.  Except not to confuse matters… not in the past two weeks during Kraftwerk’s residency.  That’s something else entirely.  In any event, he puts on quite the impressive show, and is maybe the modern day rock concert equivalent of circus freak sideshows, only with Manson, though his band is supporting, it is decidedly a one man attraction.  Most striking is how interactive it is – not just the literal interactions with the audience (and there are many), but his ability to lock onto members of the audience with his eyes, in a kind of staring match version of “chicken”, to see if he can make it striking enough to have you look away first (benefits of being right up close).  He’s a natural performer, though interestingly comes across quite different off stage (more on that later).  Really an exhilarating evening and hosted courtesy of Marilyn Manson’s unique and stylish version of reality.
