Metric at Mondavi Center, U.C. Davis | Davis, California | 4/17/2013 (Concert Review)

Metric-Live-Concert-Review-April-17-2013-Mondavi-Center-UC-Davis-California-Photos-FI1

“If you’re here, you know I love a sing along, so don’t let me down, alright? Hook me up.”  Metric’s Emily Haines, giving her introduction to the acoustic version of their classic song, “Gimme Sympathy”, which brought the intimate show at Mondavi Center to a close last night.  2013 is shaping up to be one of the best years in some time for live music concerts, and April in particular is weighted very heavy with competing and conflicting shows all over the West Coast due to Coachella and bands doing their own headlining shows in addition to that “granddaddy of U.S. festivals”.  Even so, when Metric announced a little over a dozen dates running through June, I changed around my own schedule to be sure to see them twice.  The only other artist I’m seeing twice this month is Prince, so I think that speaks volumes about the esteem with which I hold this band.  With their show a Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, they certainly didn’t disappoint.  Pre-show, looking around the beautiful venue at the crowd, it was hard to say what kind of audience the band was going to encounter.  Opener Mona delivered and got them out of their seats, and by the time Metric came on stage, they were beaming with excitement that further fueled the band.  It was definitely one of the top shows I’ve been to this year, and it was one of those shows that was so good, the only negative was those fleeting thoughts that it eventually had to come to an end.  In any event, it was spectacular and unforgettable, and the band is one of the must-see acts touring today.

Rihanna’s “Diamonds World Tour” at HP Pavilion | San Jose, California | 4/6/2013 (Concert Review)

April 7, 2013 by Jason DeBord 6 Comments

Rihanna-Concert-Review-2013-High-Resolution-Photography-Unapologetic-San-Jose-HP-Pavilion-Diamonds-World-Tour-FI

Rihanna is an artist that is one of the hardest working in music today (on and off stage), and her only real problem with her show at HP Pavilion in San Jose last night was that she has so many hit songs – even at just 25 years old – she could not fit them all into a sprawling, nearly two-hour non-stop concert event.  A prolific artist, Talk That Talk came out in 2011, just as she was wrapping up her Loud Tour (named after the studio album before that), she’s since release 2012’s Unapologetic, and tickets for this tour actually went on sale late last year as well.  The show in the massive HP Pavilion was sold out and filled to its 14,500 capacity, and it was one of the best giant arena audiences I’ve seen.  Rihanna did not disappoint, as the place was bouncing and euphoric before she ever took the stage, and things only cranked up from there.  She put on her usual top class show fueled with energy and heartfelt emotion and gratitude, as I experienced at the O2 show in London in late 2011 as her last tour came to a close.  This is definitely one of the must-see tours of the year, with both figurative and literal pyrotechnics.

Morrissey at Mondavi Center, U.C. Davis | Davis, California | 3/4/2013 (Concert Review)

Morrissey-2013-Concert-Review-Mondavi-Center-UC-Davis-California-Music-March-4-Set-List-Photos-The-Smiths-FI

“To give is the reason I live”…  a Frankie Valli lyric and a comment made by Morrissey on stage well into his set at Mondavi Center at U.C. Davis in Davis, California.  Morrissey has long been a fundamental part of my favorite music artists of all-time, and more than all of them, his music has always moved me – those special moments where the words and the sound connects with me, that chill down my spine and adrenaline rush…  as part of the soundtrack of my life, Morrissey and his work add texture, substance, and color unlike any other artist.  And his live appearances have become increasingly rare, so any opportunity I have to experience it “for real”, in person, I am there, as the live experience just magnifies it all.  And the show last night at Mondavi Center was a spectacular celebration among a special group of fans. BB-King-2013-Concert-Tour-Live-Photos-Photography-Review-Monterey-Golden-State-Theatre-FI

King of The Blues.  The Beale Street Blues Boy.  Legend.  Not much to say about having an opportunity to see B.B. King live in concert other than that it is an honor.  A very special venue – Golden State Theatre in Monterey, California – served as the perfect host to an amazing night with one of the most important musicians in our lifetimes, at age 87, as well as a phenomenal opening set from an incredibly gifted 12 year old.

Crystal-Gayle-Live-Concert-Review-2013-Thunder-Valley-Lincoln-California-Tour-FI

Last night Thunder Valley Resort & Casino played host to one of a short run of shows by music legend Crystal Gayle.  The award-winning singer, best known for her 1977 hit, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”., put on an amazing show of her own songs as well as tributes to the works of others, with her own signature style.  It was incredible to have an opportunity to enjoy the show put on by her along with her sister Peggy Sue and the five-piece band led by Jay Patten.

Marilyn Manson at Modesto Centre Plaza | Modesto, California | 2/15/2013 (Concert Review)

Marilyn-Manson-Concert-Review-Photos-2013-Modesto-California-Rock-Subculture-FI

Going to a Marilyn Manson concert is quite an experience, and probably not understood except by those who have done the same.  To draw a comparison with the art world, it is akin to going to art museums in London and stopping in at the Tate.  Except not to confuse matters… not in the past two weeks during Kraftwerk’s residency.  That’s something else entirely.  In any event, he puts on quite the impressive show, and is maybe the modern day rock concert equivalent of circus freak sideshows, only with Manson, though his band is supporting, it is decidedly a one man attraction.  Most striking is how interactive it is – not just the literal interactions with the audience (and there are many), but his ability to lock onto members of the audience with his eyes, in a kind of staring match version of “chicken”, to see if he can make it striking enough to have you look away first (benefits of being right up close).  He’s a natural performer, though interestingly comes across quite different off stage (more on that later).  Really an exhilarating evening and hosted courtesy of Marilyn Manson’s unique and stylish version of reality.

Berlin Featuring Terri Nunn at Saint Rocke | Hermosa Beach, California | 2/1/2013 (Concert Review)

February 3, 2013 by Jason DeBord 6 Comments

Berlin-Terri-Nunn-Live-Music-Concert-Tour-2013-Hermosa-Beach-Saint-Rocke-Photos-Rock-Subculture-Review-FI

There are a lot of variables that go into what makes a great live music experience – the band, your own personal connection with their music, how their music has touched your life, the venue, the energy of the crowd, supporting acts, and obviously a lot of other factors as well – and this was one of those shows that delivered on all of that and more.  Berlin featuring Terri Nunn headlined a show at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach Friday night, and it was an incredible show in an intimate setting that felt more like a friends and family atmosphere than the typical concert.  In addition, Berlin played a new material from their forthcoming studio album that was nothing less than fantastic – new songs that are distinctly Berlin yet fresh and exciting.  [Read more…]

Sound City Players at Hollywood Palladium | Hollywood, California | 1/31/2013 (Concert Review)

Sound-City-Players-Live-Concert-Foo-Fighters-Movie-Link-iTunes-Documentary-Dave-Grohl-Film-Premiere-Hollywood-Palladium-FIjpg

Last night Dave Grohl brought together some of his music icons from his newly released Sound City documentary on stage as part of his Sound City Players concert at the Hollywood Palladium.  The concert followed the Hollywood premiere of his film, just down the street earlier in the evening, and the legacy lived on with an epic show played before fans and VIPs in the upper levels of the packed venue.  It was nothing short of one of the most creative celebrations of rock music I’ve seen, with Stevie Nicks fronting the Foo Fighters-based group closing the night out with the powerful Fleetwood Mac hit, “Gold Dust Woman” (a track from one of the best albums of all time, Rumors, which itself is celebrating its 35th anniversary this week with a series of special reissues).  What an amazing concert, and one that will be long remembered by those in attendance at the show, which ran nearly three and a half hours.
