Savages at The Independent | San Francisco, California | 9/29/2013 (Concert Review)

Savages-Silence-Yourself-Tour-Concert-Review-Photos-Photography-Live-Independent-San-Francisco-September-29-FI

The real thing.  Real, authentic rock artists can’t be manufactured… they are born.  And standing witness to the phenomenal performance by London-based post-punk revival rock band Savages, I had a deep feeling that maybe they were born a few decades later than when they should have been, yet it makes them that much more powerful.  Having been born in 1973 myself, I was too young and on the wrong continent to catch the original shows put on by pioneering artists such as Bauhaus, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure…  but I had this deep sense and feeling in watching Savages at The Independent last night that maybe what I felt like experiencing their show is what it may have felt like back in the day with those iconic bands.  This was the second of two sold out shows in San Francisco.  It was a different sort of show – unlike any of the 75 or so others I’ve attended thus far this year, and the many more going back years prior to that…  there is nothing contrived or manufactured about Savages.  Nothing at all – it is just pure post-punk art at its finest, in the best format of all – a live concert performance.  They have brought something new to this space that hasn’t been felt in decades – even by those original players still recording today.  A true resurrection.  And given the state of society and culture today, it could not be more timely.

Arctic Monkeys “AM Tour” at Fox Theater | Oakland, California | 9/26/2013 (Concert Review)

“As it so happens, this one goes out to all the ladies!”  A song intro by Alex Turner, front man for Arctic Monkeys, one of the coolest and most charismatic bands on the planet.  Dispensing with too much in-between song chit chat, the band kept building upon the frenzy within the audience throughout their hour and a half set.  The fans in attendance, who started lining up a 6 am in morning to ultimately bask in the stunning lights of pure and unfiltered cool glowing from the stage, made the first of two back-to-back Arctic Monkeys shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland a tough one to best.  The band is in the midst of their world tour in support of their fifth studio album, AM, which was released earlier this month.  Showing confidence in the future, the band closed out the show with an encored that ended with their new hit single, “R U Mine?”, which might just be their best song yet.

As reported recently, there has been a lot of news coming from one of my all-time favorite bands, The Pixies, who will be playing four special concert dates in Los Angeles next week at El Rey Theatre and Mayan Theater, with new bass player Kim Shattuck.  Last month The Pixies released one new song (as a free MP3 download) and two versions of a music video of the same (Ver 1, Ver 2).  This week The Pixies have released EP-1, a new 4-track EP with all new material written by The Pixies and recorded at Rockfield Studios in the UK almost a year ago with producer Gil Norton.  They have special artwork for the EP created by Vaughan Oliver.  Full details can be found here: http://newpix.es/ep1 [Read more…]

The Breeders at The Fillmore | San Francisco, California | 8/27/2013 (Concert Review)

The-Breeders-Last-Splash-LSXX-20th-Anniversary--2013-Tour-Live-Concert-Review-Photos-Kim-Deal-4AD-FIa

This week The Breeders returned to San Francisco, the city where recorded their second studio album, Last Splash, back in 1993.  This weekend will literally mark the 20th anniversary of the release of this album, and the original band members that recorded it were on stage for two concert dates at The Fillmore on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I have been to many anniversary-style shows over the years, but this was maybe the most literal, with quite an attention to details, history, and nuance.  The Kim Deal-fronted band did a brilliant job recreating the seminal album on stage as part of their “LSXX” celebration.  As a special bonus to the two San Francisco dates (the first of which was sold out, and is the basis for this review), the “Last Splash” line-up not only played that album front to back, but their debut album, Pod, as well, so it was a really amazing show for fans of the band.

There has been a lot of news coming from one of my all-time favorite bands in the past two weeks, with the Official PIXIES Statement on founding member and bass player/vocalist Kim Deal’s departure from the band, Friday’s surprise release of a new song, “Bagboy” (with music video and free MP3 download of the track), the discovery that the backing vocals that sound like Kim Deal is actually the voice of Black Francis friend Jeremy Dubs, and tonight the announcement of Kim Deal’s replacement (Kim Shattuck from The Muffs) and a new World Tour with dates in Europe and the UK. CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy), MS MR, and IO Echo at The Independent | San Francisco, California | 6/16/2013 (Concert Review)

CSS-Cansei-de-Ser-Sexy-MS-MR-IO-Echo-Concert-Review-Photos-June-16-2013-The-Independent-San-Francisco-Live-Tour-Photos-Rock-Subculture-FI

It’s rare that audiences are treated to a real triple header concert, but that was my take on the female fronted trio of bands that owned the stage at The Independent in San Francisco last night.  How I ended up there…  I blame the Swiss (more on that later), but it was a real showcase of contemporary alternative bands that are making incredible music and bringing it on the road.  All three have also released amazing new albums this year (more on that later as well) and this material seemed to please the sold out crowd of 800 at the intimate Bay Area club.  They are all doing it again tonight at the Great American Music Hall, and I can’t recommend enough checking it out.  If they aren’t coming to a city near you, I can’t recommend enough picking up their albums, each released this year.  CSS’s Planta, MS MR’s Secondhand Rapture and IO Echo’s Ministry of Love are, for me personally, three of the best releases of the year, and there is a good chance all three will appear in my Top 10 Albums list for my 2013 End Of Year article.
