Muse | Matt Bellamy Tour-Used and Televised Performance Stage-Used Kawai MP8 II (MP8-2) Stage Piano (The 2nd Law Era)

February 25, 2026 by Jason DeBord

This article documents and preserves known details, visual evidence, and archival context relating to a Kawai MP8 II (MP8-2) stage piano owned and used by Muse during live performances in the early 2010s, including appearances during the The 2nd Law touring cycle and associated televised and special-event performances.

Special Note: This Kawai MP8 II Stage Keyboard is currently available for purchase (please contact me for details).

The 2nd Law Touring Era

At the time of its release, the Kawai MP8 II represented the company’s flagship professional stage piano, incorporating their AWA PRO II wooden-key graded hammer action and Harmonic Imaging XL sound engine. Designed for touring artists requiring acoustic piano realism in a portable format, the MP8-II was widely respected for its weighty action and expressive dynamic range — attributes particularly suited to Bellamy’s dramatic piano-driven compositions during this era.

Weighing approximately 77 pounds, the instrument was built for professional touring environments, featuring balanced outputs, multi-pedal control options, and full MIDI integration — making it ideal for large-scale productions such as arena tours and internationally televised performances.

The instrument documented here was deployed as part of Muse’s live keyboard architecture during the 2012-2013 era, a period marked by increasingly layered arrangements and expanded touring production.

Confirmed visual documentation places this model of Kawai MP8 II in use during performances in 2013, including the War Child BRITs Week performance at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London (February 18, 2013), where Bellamy is seen interacting with the instrument within a custom piano-style casing integrated into the stage design.

Archival video and photography from the same touring period show Bellamy performing on the MP8 II across multiple international dates consistent with the The 2nd Law era production configuration.

Historical Context

During the The 2nd Law touring cycle (2012–2013), Muse incorporated a hybridized live setup combining traditional backline, digital processing systems, custom monitoring configurations, and staged theatrical elements.

The Kawai MP8 II is an 88-key graded hammer action stage piano designed for professional live performance use. Known for its weighted action and reliability, it became a suitable platform for integration into touring rigs requiring both piano realism and stage durability.

During this era, the MP8 II was housed in multiple custom enclosures depending on the production — including a clear plexiglass grand-style casing, a white upright-style housing used for the War Child performance, and a metallic grand enclosure seen during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

For the War Child 2013 performance, the instrument was placed inside a formal piano-style enclosure, contributing visually to the theatrical presentation while maintaining the portability and modularity of a stage keyboard system. At that performance, Bellamy famously stood atop the instrument during a climactic moment — further embedding it within the visual memory of that show.

Professional touring productions commonly employ duplicate instruments for redundancy and logistical continuity. While multiple MP8 II units may have been present within the broader touring inventory, the documented instrument offered here represents an authentic surviving example from Muse’s operational rig during this defined performance period.

Touring Use and Documentation (Circa 2012–2013)

Documented and widely circulated performance footage confirms Matt Bellamy using the Kawai MP8 II during multiple performances in 2013 and surrounding dates within the The 2nd Law cycle.

Notable appearances of this model include:

  • February 18, 2013 — O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London (War Child BRITs Week Show)
  • Additional 2013 touring dates consistent with the The 2nd Law live configuration

Visual comparisons confirm matching model characteristics, casing placement, and stage integration consistent with Muse’s production setup during this era.

Documented Use – 2012–2013 Touring Cycle

During Muse’s 2012–2013 live performances, including the January 12, 2013 show at Saitama Super Arena in Japan, Matt Bellamy performed from within a custom plexiglass piano housing containing a Kawai MP8 II stage piano.

Television footage from the performance clearly reveals the KAWAI rear branding and MP8 II model configuration visible through the transparent casing as stage lighting shifts. The control layout, rear panel configuration, and form factor are consistent with the MP8 II model documented here.

As is typical of major touring productions, multiple identical units are often deployed across international dates for redundancy and logistical efficiency. This instrument is documented as part of Muse’s official collection and represents the same model type employed during that touring era.

Physical Description

The Kawai MP8 II stage piano features:

  • 88-key graded hammer action keyboard
  • Professional stage piano configuration
  • Integrated digital sound engine
  • Metal chassis construction suitable for touring use

Dimensions:
57 x 17 x 8.5 inches

Weight:
Approximately 77 pounds

The serial number (9522652) is present on the underside technical label and corresponds directly with the Certificate of Authenticity issued at the time of decommissioning from the band’s touring inventory.

The instrument exhibits condition consistent with professional touring deployment.

Provenance and Acquisition

This Kawai MP8 II was acquired directly from the Official Muse Reverb Store following its decommissioning from the band’s touring inventory.

It is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity from Matt Bellamy, dated August 8, 2023, specifically referencing the instrument’s serial number.

The COA provides direct documentation linking the instrument to Muse’s official equipment liquidation process.

Statement of Significance & High-Profile Performances

During the 2012–2013 touring cycle, Matt Bellamy’s Kawai MP8 II stage pianos were incorporated into multiple custom-built stage housings tailored to specific productions.

These included:

  • A transparent plexiglass grand-style enclosure used during arena performances such as the January 12, 2013 show at Saitama Super Arena in Japan.
  • A white upright-style casing seen during the War Child concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London.
  • A silver metallic grand-style enclosure used during Muse’s performance of “Survival” at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In broadcast footage of the Olympic performance, portions of the rear panel and “MP” model designation are visible beneath the enclosure, consistent with the Kawai MP8 II platform. The distinctive dual control wheels to the left of the keybed — also present on this instrument — are likewise visible in various televised and live performance recordings from the period.

While the visual housings varied depending on the production, the underlying MP8 II stage piano remained a consistent element of Bellamy’s live keyboard setup during this era.

Olympic Context – “Survival” (London 2012)

Muse performed their official London 2012 Olympic Games song, “Survival,” during the Closing Ceremony on August 12, 2012 at the Olympic Stadium.

The song had been commissioned as the official theme of the Games and was used extensively throughout the event, including medal ceremonies. Written by Matt Bellamy to express conviction, determination, and competitive intensity, “Survival” became one of the defining musical signatures of London 2012 and was later included on the London 2012: Rock The Games compilation.

The Closing Ceremony segment — part of the larger program titled “A Symphony of British Music” — featured a high-energy production complete with pyrotechnics and flame effects surrounding the band on a dedicated stage platform.

Notably, Muse’s performance was controversially cut from the NBC broadcast in the United States, prompting fan backlash at the time under the hashtag #NBCfail. Despite the omission from that specific broadcast feed, the performance was internationally televised and remains widely documented.

In footage from the Olympic performance, Matt Bellamy is seen performing within a silver metallic grand-style enclosure built around his touring Kawai MP8 II stage piano platform. Portions of the rear panel and “MP” designation are visible in certain lighting conditions, consistent with the model used throughout this era.

Collector Summary

The Kawai MP8 II represents an important chapter in Muse’s live evolution during the early 2010s — a period that saw the band transition between stadium-scale theatrical productions and intimate televised performances.

As documented through official sale records, performance footage, and manufacturer identification, the MP8 II model formed part of Bellamy’s live piano platform during this era.

Instruments from this period rarely surface through official channels. The inclusion of a signed Muse Certificate of Authenticity and traceable serial documentation provides a clear provenance trail linking this instrument to the band’s curated archive dispersal.

Muse | Matt Bellamy Tour Used and Televised Performance Stage-Used Dickinson Custom Active Stage Monitor Wedge with Rolling Flight Case

February 20, 2026 by Jason DeBord

This article documents and preserves known details, visual evidence, and archival photography relating to a Dickinson active stage monitor wedge built for, owned and used by Muse, and utilized onstage by Matt Bellamy during live performances between 2012 and late 2014.¹

Special Note: This Stage-Used Dickinson Custom Active Stage Monitor Wedge with Rolling Flight Case is available for purchase (please contact me for details).

Custom Dickinson Monitor Wedge on Stage at Shepherd’s Bush “War Child” Concert in 2013

The monitor wedge documented here was deployed by Muse during select arena performances and major international festival appearances between 2012 and late 2014. Verified onstage appearances include a 2012 arena performance in Prague, Czech Republic, the War Child 20th Anniversary performance at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London (February 2013), Lollapalooza Brazil (2014), and Coachella (2014). ²³⁴⁵

Visual documentation confirms that Dickinson amplification systems were deployed selectively during this period, rather than universally across all Muse performances, indicating intentional deployment based on stage design and performance requirements rather than fixed backline use.

The object documented here is a Dickinson Custom Active Stage Monitor Wedge, housed within its original custom rolling flight case. According to direct correspondence with Jon Dickinson, founder and builder at Dickinson Amps, only two examples of this monitor wedge design were produced, and they were constructed specifically for Muse.⁶ The units were built with integrated monitor speakers and were used by Matt Bellamy both as onstage monitors and as deliberate feedback-generation tools during live performances.

In subsequent correspondence, Dickinson clarified the developmental sequence of Muse’s Dickinson equipment, noting that Bellamy initially used a MkII combo for recording, followed by MkII combo speaker cabinets mounted on a rotating stand, before transitioning to the custom monitor wedges documented here.⁶ These wedges therefore represent the final iteration in Bellamy’s Dickinson stage-monitor evolution during this era.

The wedge retains its original internal speaker components and remains mounted in its touring flight case, exhibiting wear and markings consistent with extended professional stage use.

Historical Context

During the early 2010s, Muse employed a variety of bespoke amplification and monitoring solutions as part of their evolving live production environment. Dickinson Amps, a UK-based boutique builder, supplied custom equipment tailored to Bellamy’s performance requirements, including specialized monitoring configurations designed to integrate controlled feedback as a musical and theatrical element.

This period encompasses the The 2nd Law touring cycle and subsequent festival performances, a time characterized by increasingly sophisticated stage design and intentional interaction between performers and amplification systems. The monitor wedge documented here functioned not merely as reinforcement equipment, but as an integrated performance tool within Muse’s live sound architecture.

Touring Use, Documentation and Photo Match (2012-2014)

This wedge was generally on tour for many appearances throughout 2013 and all three 2014 appearances, though first appeared in late 2012.

Archival material from Dickinson Amplification dated November 29, 2012 documents the completion of two custom “MUSE monitors,” matching the distinctive chrome enclosures seen in subsequent live performances beginning November 22, 2012. Below is an archival screen capture from the official Dickinson website showing the two stage monitors brand new prior to deliver to the band (posted on the site in late 2012):

Confirmed documented notable appearances of this wedge include:

November 22, 2012 — O2 Arena at Prague, Czech Republic
Earliest confirmed documented onstage appearance identified to date.

February 18, 2013 — O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire (War Child BRITs Show) at London, United Kingdom
War Child BRITs Show 20th Anniversary performance.

June 2, 2013 — Horse Guard’s Parade Ground (World War Z Premiere), at London, United Kingdom
World War Z premiere performance. [see coverage, photos and videos here at RockSubculture.com] Performance held in conjunction with the London premiere of World War Z.

A distinct dent visible on the upper-right front framing of the wedge in a photograph taken by the author during this performance remains present on the unit today, allowing a direct visual photo match between contemporaneous imagery and the object as currently preserved:

September 9, 2013 — Parque Olímpico Cidade do Rock (Rock in Rio) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Major international festival appearance.

September 20, 2013 — MGM Grand Garden Arena (iHeart Music Festival) at Las Vegas, Nevada
Major international festival appearance.

October 4 & 11, 2013 — Zilker Metropolitan Park (Austin City Limits) at Austin, Texas
Major international festival appearance.

April 5, 2014 — Autódromo José Carlos Pace (Lollapalooza Brasil) at São Paulo, Brazil
Major international festival appearance.

April 12 & 19, 2014 — Empire Polo Field (Coachella Festival) at Indio, California
Latest confirmed documented onstage appearance identified to date.

No documented onstage use of this wedge has been identified after late 2014.

Physical Description

The Dickinson Custom Active Stage Monitor Wedge features a floor-standing wedge form factor with angled front baffle designed for stage-side placement. The enclosure houses integrated monitor speaker drivers and internal routing consistent with professional live sound monitoring applications.

According to Dickinson, the units were fabricated with custom modifications, including hand-cut rear access openings for connectors and/or control access.⁶

The accompanying rolling flight case was custom-built for transport and storage of the wedge. Interior foam is cut to the contour of the enclosure, and exterior touring labels, surface wear, and handling marks are consistent with multi-year international touring use.

The monitor retains its original internal speaker configuration and remains preserved in its touring state.

The rolling flight case remains in original touring configuration. The original caster wheels were replaced by the author after acquisition due to deterioration consistent with age and extended use. The replacement wheels are of the same style and function as the originals.

Provenance and Acquisition

This monitor wedge was acquired directly from the Official Muse Reverb Store in London following its decommissioning from the band’s touring inventory. The purchase included the original rolling flight case and intact internal speaker components.

Subsequent research included review of archival video footage, broadcast material, concert photography, and contemporary documentation in order to establish confirmed onstage appearances and define a conservative usage timeline.

Statement of Rarity

Direct correspondence with Jon Dickinson confirms that only two examples of this custom monitor wedge were produced for Muse.⁶ No catalog listing, model designation, or production variant exists for this design outside of those two units.

With documented multi-year onstage use by Matt Bellamy, manufacturer confirmation of limited production, preserved original components, and a visual screen match to specific performance photography, the wedge documented here represents one of only two known examples of bespoke stage-monitoring equipment purpose-built for Muse’s live performances during the early 2010s.

Collector Summary

This Dickinson Custom Active Stage Monitor Wedge represents a convergence of limited-production fabrication, verified artist use, and documented appearance across major international performances between 2012 and late 2014.

Constructed specifically for Muse as part of Matt Bellamy’s evolving Dickinson stage-monitor configuration, and confirmed by the builder as one of only two produced, the wedge occupies a distinct position within the band’s early-2010s live production history. Preserved in its original touring flight case, with intact internal components and identifiable period wear consistent with documented appearances, it stands as a historically anchored artifact from a defined chapter of Muse’s performance era.

The Rock Subculture Journal 2013 Year In Review (Top 10 Live Music Concerts, Top 10 Albums, Top 100 Songs, and more…)

Jason-DeBords-Rock-Subculture-Journal-Concert-Live-Music-2013-Year-In-Review-Top-10-Songs-Albums-Concerts-News-Media-Tour-Guide-Photography-FI

As with last year’s 2012 Year In Review, reflecting on the many shows attended in 2013 and trying to make some sense of it all was a challenge.  Having attended nearly 100 events, which usually includes at least one supporting act and a headliner, as well as one 10-day festival and many multi-artist shows, I saw literally hundreds of sets.  Miraculously, I can probably count on one hand the number that were “bad”, and the majority were awesome in one or more ways.   Still, I feel it is important to highlight the best of the best of the best, in an attempt to celebrate an amazing year of music.  You can also check out my Top 100 Concert Photos of 2013 in that separate article.

Muse at Royal Horse Guard’s Parade (World War Z Premiere) | London, England | 6/2/2013 (Concert Review)

June 3, 2013 by Jason DeBord 6 Comments

Muse-Concert-Review-Royal-Horse-Guard-Parade-London-World-War-Z-Paramount-Movie-Premiere-Photos-FIa

15,000 hardcore Muse fans showed up at the Royal Horse Guard’s Parade in London, England last night for a special one-off concert promoting the premiere of Paramount’s new film, World War Z.   As fans waited for the expected partial show (rumor was about half an hour of actual performance), we were shown the same movie trailer over and over and told that Brad Pitt would be appearing on stage before us.  Well, he never did appear (apart from some silent footage on the jumbo monitors from the red carpet), but I don’t think the Muse fans could care less, as the usual opener to their shows was modified with some footage from the film, and after those few moments, it was pure Muse (not “Muze”, as the marketing department for the film would like us to believe).  Being from the U.S., the awesome setting amidst historic London buildings and the awesome crowd certainly was not lost on me.  The energy was as palpable as the heat wave surging into the audience from the pyrotechnics above the stage.  But the real power came from the band, who have grown into being one of the best acts touring today, with real anthemic music that stirs the crowd into a fist-pumping frenzy.  They ended up playing maybe just under an hour, but I’m certain that they satisfied all who turned out for the special free show, most of whom turned out for the two shows at Emirates Stadium and seemingly universally declared them the best Muse concerts ever.

Muse at Sleep Train Arena | Sacramento, California | 1/29/2013 (Concert Review)

Muse-Band-Music-Concert-Review-2013-Sleep-Train-Arena-Sacramento-California-January-Rock-Subculture-Journal-Feature-FI

The Muse concert in Sacramento last night at the Sleep Train Arena was, on a personal note, Night #2 of 2 for me, having seen them the night before at Oracle Arena in Oakland.  Two totally different experiences (more on that later), but another Epic show by a band that delivers rock entertainment like no one else on tour today.  Over the course of seeing them, one thing I’ve learned is that location matters at these shows, and I wouldn’t necessarily say one place is better than another (close or far), as they have such an elaborate and brilliant production and presentation, wherever you are in the venue you will experience something very special indeed.  As I said in yesterday’s review, they are most definitely a band that needs to be experienced live in concert and their music is designed to be performed live in front of thousands. Muse are unlike any other band recording and performing today.  And having watched them perform at Oracle Arena last night, they are most definitely a band that needs to be experienced live in concert.  It’s as if the band, and their music, is designed to be performed live in front of thousands…  and having been to a great many concerts in my time, I would rate their stage production itself in the top three I’ve ever seen.  [Read more…]

2012 was an amazing year for both new music and live concert events, and although writing this “year in review” proved to be a monumental task, it was fun for me to do it to relive some special moments and appreciate the opportunities I had over the past 12 months to find new music and attend so many awesome live shows.  It’s funny because many concerts and tours are announced with little notice, so at the start of any given year, you don’t really know what to expect, and 2012 definitely held a lot of surprises.  When all was said and done, I ended up going to 58 concerts in 2012, each of which featured anywhere from one to seven artists, so that is a lot of live performances.
