The Invisible Lighthouse – A Film and Live Performance by Thomas Dolby at Crest Theatre | Sacramento, California | 11/23/2013 (Concert Review)

November 24, 2013 by Jason DeBord 4 Comments

Concert-Review-Thomas-Dolby-The-Invisible-Lighthouse-Film-and-Performance-by-Thomas-Dolby-Crest-Theatre-Sacramento-November-23-2013-Documentary-Review-FI

“It’s a happy and a sad occasion…”  Thomas Dolby talking about his last stop at Creat Theatre in Sacramento last night, in his preface to “performing” his very personal documentary film, The Invisible Lighthouse Tour.  Really a film unlike any I’ve ever experienced, it was just that – an experience.  Dolby has been a pioneer in pop culture from his very beginnings, well known for his 1982 New Wave hit, “She Blinded Me With Science” among a number of other accomplishments in and out of music.  Dolby’s partner on the stage, Blake Leyh, produced some amazing “analog”, impressionistic sound effects during the film, which Dolby scored and narrated, which made it clear that each performance of his film has been quite unique and different.  A real pioneer in the arts, Dolby certainly has consistently blazed his own path, and after hearing his candid thoughts throughout the event, it would seem that he operates in a bit of a pop culture bubble, and looks to technology to find new ways in which to create meaningful art and vehicles for expression, and currently he is inspired by the ability today to make powerful films, sans Hollywood budgets and crews.  The result is something that literally has to be experienced in a theater, and hopefully this event is truly not the last for The Invisible Lighthouse.

MS MR at The Independent | San Francisco, California | 10/21/2013 (Concert Review)

MS-MR-Concert-Review-Tour-Photos-2013-San-Francisco-The-Independent-Live-Another-Planet-FIA

“Thank you so, so much for being here tonight.  It means so, so much to us.”  Lizzy Plapinger, the “MS” in MS MR thanking the crowd at the Independent in San Francisco last night for being “early adopters” of their music, while the “MR” half, Max Hershenow, preps the crowd for the last song of the night, “Hurricane”.  Appropriately enough, the new band has taken the music industry by storm with their phenomenal first studio album, Secondhand Rapture, which I certainly rank as one of the Top 10 Albums of 2013.  Their unique blend of at once dark and poppy electronic music has taken me back to those same feelings I had when I found Yazoo 30 years ago (with another male-female duo in Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet), though updated and reflective of our time today.  This was the third of three sell out shows at The Independent in the past week, which is remarkable since it was only four months ago that I saw them take the same stage supporting CSS back in June.  In much the same way Imagine Dragons graduated from The Independent (they played there as well earlier this year) to filling sports arenas, I suspect that MS MR will continue on with their upward trajectory, carried by their awesome music and brilliant live performances, which sound as sublime as the studio recordings.  This is definitely a tour that fan who are lucky enough to check out will not forget.

Hope Sandoval and David Roback’s Mazzy Star launched their first new album in 17 years, Seasons of Your Day, last month, and are kicking off a modest North American tour running the month of November.  It definitely ranks as one of the best albums of the year, so it should be a fantastic concert tour. Arctic Monkeys “AM Tour” at Fox Theater | Oakland, California | 9/26/2013 (Concert Review)

Arctic-Monkeys-Concert-Review-2013-Tour-Photos-Fox-Theater-Oakland-California-September-26-27-FI

“As it so happens, this one goes out to all the ladies!”  A song intro by Alex Turner, front man for Arctic Monkeys, one of the coolest and most charismatic bands on the planet.  Dispensing with too much in-between song chit chat, the band kept building upon the frenzy within the audience throughout their hour and a half set.  The fans in attendance, who started lining up a 6 am in morning to ultimately bask in the stunning lights of pure and unfiltered cool glowing from the stage, made the first of two back-to-back Arctic Monkeys shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland a tough one to best.  The band is in the midst of their world tour in support of their fifth studio album, AM, which was released earlier this month.  Showing confidence in the future, the band closed out the show with an encored that ended with their new hit single, “R U Mine?”, which might just be their best song yet.

Little Boots with MNDR at The Independent | San Francisco, California | 9/24/2013 (Concert Review)

“Are you up for a rave?  Do you have raves in San Francisco on a Tuesday?”  Victoria Christina Hesketh, AKA Little Boots, leading into “Broken Record”, the thumping lead single from her highly acclaimed second studio album Nocturnes, which was released in May.  A natural performer, Little Boots certainly brought a special mix of charisma and energy to the stage to power her amazing music, building on Amanda Warner of MDNR’s blazing opening set within the intimate setting of The Independent.  Definitely a great night of contemporary electronic synthpop as Little Boots kicks off her world tour running through the end of the year.

OneRepublic-Native-Tour-2013-Concert-Review-Mountain-Winery-Saratoga-09-08-2013-Photos-FI

“Tonight what you see is a very, very, very stripped, stripped version of what it is that we do on a nightly basis…”  OneRepublic’s show at Mountain Winery in Saratoga Sunday night was one of those very rare shows that surprised me (in a good way) on all counts.  It was my first time seeing the band live, who are touring their latest studio album, Native (more on that later, also in a good way).  Since it was such a different show from the norm, I can’t really account for what is different, though I suspect it was much more acoustic-driven than their typical set, though both approaches certainly do justice to their material.  One thing that was apparent is that the group is made up of musicians at heart, and perfectionists in recreating their music on stage in a very real way.  Their crew quite masterfully swapped out instruments (large on small) on stage in-between each song, helping to create a very memorable night that was a tapestry of the great music that OneRepublic has created.  They sounded phenomenal and their identity as a band certainly came through in a variety of ways, especially their relationships with each other and boundless energy on stage.  The experience definitely made me a bigger fan and my curiosity is definitely piqued and interested in checking out the other kind of show that they referenced as different from this one, which felt quite intimate and special.

The-Breeders-Last-Splash-LSXX-20th-Anniversary--2013-Tour-Live-Concert-Review-Photos-Kim-Deal-4AD-FIa

This week The Breeders returned to San Francisco, the city where recorded their second studio album, Last Splash, back in 1993.  This weekend will literally mark the 20th anniversary of the release of this album, and the original band members that recorded it were on stage for two concert dates at The Fillmore on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I have been to many anniversary-style shows over the years, but this was maybe the most literal, with quite an attention to details, history, and nuance.  The Kim Deal-fronted band did a brilliant job recreating the seminal album on stage as part of their “LSXX” celebration.  As a special bonus to the two San Francisco dates (the first of which was sold out, and is the basis for this review), the “Last Splash” line-up not only played that album front to back, but their debut album, Pod, as well, so it was a really amazing show for fans of the band.
